Nose ring became a trend when I was a teenager although not
everyone thought it was a good idea. In another article I wrote about my
experience with my best friend Heather getting our belly buttons pierced.
Shortly after that, I decided to get my nostril pierced as well. However,
Heather didn't go along with me this time. I guess she was a bit squeamish
about getting a nose piercing and a nose ring especially after the unfortunate experience with
her belly button ring.
Besides, she thought it was kinda gross. This is what she said to me: "I
don't begrudge anyone's fashion sense. I don't mind the earring in the
eyebrow look but whenever I see someone wearing a nose ring, I can't help
thinking about all the nasty stuff that comes out of noses and how it
would get stuck around that piece of jewelry. Eww!"I just giggled in
amusement. Being the rebellious kid I was, I couldn't care less about
being gross. In fact I thought it was kinda cool. Many people wear a nose
ring for the shock value while others just like the way it looks. I did it
for both reasons :) I was set to get my nose pierced although I knew my
dad would probably eat me alive when he found out; but I would deal with
that later. First thing's first :)
So I went to my favorite tattoo and
piercing parlor, picked out a nose ring and went ahead with the nose
piercing. Have to admit I got a little scared during the process,
looking at the big needle going through my nostril. BTW, it's not
advisable to use a piercing gun since it can cause more trauma, making it
harder for the tissues to heal.
To make it worse, my nose piercing site was
bleeding which made me scream although it wasn't really that painful. Luckily
though, the experienced piercer was really calm and he reassured me that
it was no big deal. He said it's common among those with a lot of
capillaries in the nostril. So don't let that scare you from getting a
nose ring.
Nevertheless, I was relieved
when the bleeding finally stopped and the piercing was over. The best part
was of course, wearing my cool and sexy nose ring. When I looked in the
mirror I was ecstatic. I tell you, it was worth all the minor
inconveniences of the nose piercing process. Now it was show off time!
Most of my friends were wowing and ooh and aahing when they saw me with my
new nose ring. A few asked me where I got it and if it hurt to get my nose
pierced as they also wanted to have it done. Some were shocked while a few others
thought it was silly but in general the reactions were positive. I myself
loved my nose ring and at the end of the day that's all that mattered.
But it wasn't the end of the day yet. I still had to face my parents and
that got me a little nervous. I expected they would object to me wearing a
nose ring, but wasn't sure badly they would react. Nonetheless, I had
decided to get one and that was it. Not surprisingly they were both
shocked when they saw me. "What's that hanging from your nose?!" roared my dad. "Uhh...
a nose ring", I replied timidly. He was outraged and screamed at me for
hours on end. Well, that's how long it felt :)
Even my mom who is a lot more liberal gave me a long lecture about how I
would never get a professional job with a nose ring, and that even if I
took it out the hole would still be there and very visible. She said I
might think a nose ring looked cool then, but I might regret it in the
future and would have to live with it since it would take forever for the
hole to close. My parents said it was bad enough that I had my belly
button pierced but at least I could cover it if I needed to, but I would
not be able to hide my nose.
Can you believe it they actually told me to go back and return the nose
ring? I said, what good would that do? I already had a hole in my nostril,
and taking the nose ring out would only make the things they feared
happen sooner rather than later. After vigorously arguing back and forth
they finally gave in and let me keep my nose ring. Whew! :)
Today I'm still proud to wear my nose ring. I have a great job which allows
the employees to dress casually and wear any kind of jewelry including
nose rings. Most people compliment me on wearing a nose ring. Occasionally
though, someone would ask me how I blow my nose. I always get a kick out
of that one. My answer is always the same which is "the way you normally
do" and then I giggle in amusement.
Sometimes people's questions about nose rings really blow me
away. Like one time I read online somebody asked if snot would come out
through the piercing hole when someone with a nose ring blew their nose.
That was so freakin' hilarious I couldn't stop laughing my ass off!
But you do need to spend extra time cleaning your nose ring and the
surrounding area when you have a cold or allergy which I do quite often... <ha... hatchoo!>
but that's no big deal <sniff, sniff!> Excuse me, I need to blow my
nose... <honk! honk!> God, that's a lot of snot!
Sorry, I'm having a bad cold. So where was I? Oh yeah, talking about my
nose ring, he he he!
Like with my belly button ring, my
little daughter also adores my nose ring. She asked me if she could get
one too, and I told her she would have to wait a few years (she's only 8)
so it wouldn't hurt, and she's ok with that :)
Actually nose rings go back to biblical time. In Genesis 24:47 you can
read that Rebekah received gifts, and one of them was a nose ring. There's
nothing wrong with expressing yourself, and if you want to get a nose
ring, then you should. It is your body after all.
You also have the option of getting non-piercing body jewelry. That
way you can try the look out before you commit, and you can also get a
sense of what it's like to have something hanging from your nose. You may
find you love it, and ahead and get the pierced nose ring. If
you think nose rings are stylish but are a bit squeamish about getting
your nose pierced or not comfortable with having a hole, then a clip-on or
fake nose ring is a great alternative for you.
If you do decide to get your nostril pierced, it's more advisable to go
with a nose ring instead of a nose stud since most rings are made of
hypoallergenic material while most studs are not. In addition, you're more
likely to get an infection with a nose stud when it sinks into the tissue
(Ref.

Have fun with your nose ring!
