Fun Christmas Vacation Ideas For Your Family

Christmas vacation is something to look forward to every year, especially if you have children or you're a child yourself :) Yes, Christmas is my favorite time of year and I love everything about it. I do understand some people tend to feel lonely during this time especially if they live alone or far from their loved ones. However, there's no reason for anyone not to enjoy the holiday season. After all, it's your attitude that determines how much fun you have. I myself am very fortunate to have my family around me over Christmas vacation.

As every parent would know, Christmas is a very special time for the kids. Seeing their stockings lined up and their excited faces waiting for Santa is the magic of Christmas vacation.

When I was little, my parents would wait for me to go to sleep so they could creep into my bedroom and fill Santa's sack, which kept them up late.

We would always leave a slice of Christmas cake and a sherry for Santa and this had always disappeared by morning, remarkably :)

Family makes the best Christmas vacation, and so does food! I love food at all times but there's nothing like a homemade Christmas dinner.

Christmas vacation pictureI cherish a traditional meal of ham or turkey with all the trimmings, accompanied by yams, mashed potatoes, onion gravy, chestnut stuffing, bread sauce, cranberry sauce and sprouts. A Christmas vacation isn't real until you've had Christmas pudding and brandy sauce.

After dinner is usually our quiet time when we read our new books or play our new games. When I was a kid, I spent much of my Christmas vacation assembling Lego sets or building up train tracks with other children.

The leftovers are great too on the following day. When the dinner is finally digested, it's time for turkey sandwiches and warmed mince pies.

Presents are of course, another excitement. I love to see them all wrapped up in bows and sitting expectantly under the Christmas tree. Christmas vacation is just as enjoyable for giving as receiving gifts. I delight in tracking down the exact thing for my loved ones and seeing their faces light up on Christmas morning.

Many people also travel to enjoy the holidays with distant family members, or they may be taking advantage of a special Christmas vacation deal or package to spend their holiday at a ski resort or winter camping in the mountains. Of course, you may also go to exotic Christmas vacation spots like Hawaii or the Caribbean if you love warm weather like I do :)

If you are traveling on a plane with children, be prepared. It could be a bit challenging, but there are many things that can be done to make your Christmas vacation very enjoyable instead of wishing the holidays were already over. You should know that most likely, you will be spending more time than planned in the airport waiting. Flights may be delayed due to weather condition or simply the busyness of holiday travel.

Furthermore, security is much stricter nowadays, so dress and pack accordingly. You'll probably have to remove your shoes, so think ahead. Untying and re-tying everyone's shoes at the airport when you're carrying luggage and in a hurry can certainly put a damp on your Christmas vacation. If you live in the South like I do or are traveling somewhere warm, you can get away with wearing sandals or flip flops. Otherwise, have your family members wear comfortable slip-on shoes that will cut down on time for everyone.

Packing lots of entertainment for the kids is a great idea. The newer the items are, the better. New coloring books and games will keep children busy for a bit longer than something that is already familiar to them. Avoid bringing anything messy. Magic markers and Play-Doh are not things you want your kids to be experimenting with while flying on their Christmas vacation (or any other time for that matter). The people across the aisle from you might not appreciate their clay sculptures falling all over the place. Kids love music, so give them CD or MP3 players and headphones, and they'll be all set.

It is always a good idea to be organized when traveling. Knowing about the Christmas vacation spots you plan to visit and having everything mapped out might save you some headaches and arguments. You certainly don't want to turn into a family of grinches :) A holiday should always be enjoyable. Go to some great lengths ahead of time to ensure that you will have the best Christmas vacation.

You may find Christmas vacation specials if you're thinking of visiting someplace isolated and wonderful for the holidays. Some hotels and resorts may offer discounts or cheap rates when you spend your Christmas vacation with them. You can also find great deals on Christmas vacation packages. Just do some research in advance to come up with a great Christmas vacation idea which could lead you to a wise and economical decision.

Another idea is to try to find last minute Christmas vacation specials, usually due to other people's cancellations. They can be pretty cheap, but to enjoy these types of deals you need to be flexible and be ready to leave at a moment's notice.

Whenever you arrive at your destination, no matter where it is, take the time to relax. Watching TV may not be a bad idea. There's normally a few good movies on and it doesn't matter if we've all seen The Wizard of Oz or The Christmas Story many times. Or, you can always watch the famed movie "Christmas vacation". You may realize how normal your family is after all :)
