Delicious Cheese Pizza Facts
Plain cheese pizza (can you say "cheese"?) has always been one of my
favorite foods since I was a little girl. Things were a little different back
then. We lived in a small town and there were no Domino's, Pizza Hut, or Chuck e
Cheese around
where we could go out or call to have our pizza delivered. In fact, some of the best
cheese pizza I've ever had is that my grandma used to make for us kids when we
stayed over on Saturday nights.
|
The cheese pizza we had came in a uniquely shaped box, containing a dough mix, a
cheese packet, and a cylinder of sauce. Some of you might guess it: the Chef
Boyardee pizza in a box. I can still smell the thin crust and yeasty pizza with sweet
sauce and salty parmesan crumbs of melted cheese. Mmm... are you hungry yet? :)
I know, it was probably nothing like any cheese pizza you eat today in
restaurants or any kind of cheese pizza pie like Philly Cheese Steak Pizza kids nowadays have. So that was
gourmet to us, and to me still the best cheese pizza I've ever had. For obvious
reasons.
So are you a pizza lover, or maybe even a pizza connoisseur? Since you're
reading this, most likely you are. Did you know that pizza is one of the top
ten foods of choice at least in the US? There're a few pretty interesting facts
about our favorite food that I'll share with you, and I'll try to do it without
bringing on even deeper cravings or making myself (and probably you) prematurely
hungry :) So without further ado, here's your cheese pizza trivia...
* 4 billion pizzas were purchased in one year (at least within the last few
years).
* People, whether actual cheese pizza lovers or not, consume about 350 million
tons of frozen pizza every year. Wonder how much cheese that involves.
* Although you and I might favor the straight-up cheese pizza, the topping of
choice in America is pepperoni.
* Only 4% of pizza-eaters never go out for it (eat or buy pizza out).
And I saved the best for last...
* Although the first pizzas were considered peasant food (cheap and easy was the
fare), the first official cheese pizza was actually created for royalty
in Italy by a baker who was summoned to cook for the visiting King Umberto and
the Queen Margherita. Raffaele Esposito then decided to design the cheese pizza
around the Italian flag simply using mozzarella cheese, tomatoes, and basil,
making a white, red, and green cuisine that got instant rave reviews and that
has endured for over 111 years!
So, there you have it folks! The fun cheese pizza trivia which I decided to
share with you instead of recommending the best, richest, doughiest, cheesiest,
or other superlative pizza made in family-owned local pizzerias (where you'll
most likely find the best cheese pizza), since that wouldn't be very
helpful considering many of my readers live in different parts of the world.
If you're looking for cheese pizza recipes and reviews, simply search online and
you'll find plenty of great ones. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to get ready
for a trip to my favorite pizza parlor and have a yummy cheese pizza with
cheese-filled crust for
dinner.
