Write down everything that you can think of needing. Think of what you need during a typical day. Things such as a wash basin and dish soap are often forgotten when going camping but how else will you wash your dishes? Depending on how hardcore of a camper you are, you may either have an inflatable mattress with sheets, pillows and blankets or just a sleeping bag on the ground will do. These are all things to think about to make your trip a successful one. Another thing to remember is whether your campsite will be accessible by vehicle or if you have to walk there. This could really determine decide how many things you can pack, obviously. Smart meal planning is also a good way to camp. If you just pack a variety of food without planning you will be disappointed. If you are traveling with another family, choose which meals to make for the whole group then you will not have to cook or make every meal.
Besides all of the basic necessities of food, type of shelter etc, the most important thing to plan for is your safety. Always [pack|bring} one first aid kit or even a variety of first aid kits to ensure your family can be helped in case of a minor skinned knee or a possible altercation with an animal that wandered closely to your campsite. Sunburn, bug bites and poison ivy are also common while being a camper so pack things for that in your first aid kit.
