Affordable contemporary furniture has always been one of my
passions ever since I was in college. I decided to move into an apartment
at the end of my freshman year, and I needed some furniture. At the time I
could only afford the cheapest style of furniture. For a reasonable price
the slick modern furniture created quite a cozy atmosphere.
I have always been interested in
contemporary interior design, so naturally contemporary furniture is part
of it. However, I also realize that not everyone can afford the high-end
modern furniture, especially college students and newly wed couples who
are just starting out. Having been a student myself, I could certainly
relate to that. That's why I decided to focus on affordable contemporary
furniture.After I graduated from college I decided to pursue my
passion. I wasn't too interested in making furniture, but I had a friend
who did. He actually studied with a local furniture maker who specialized
in very expensive furniture for quite exclusive clients. Although
affordable contemporary furniture was not his forte, he was a true
craftsman who made his tables, chairs, and beds with an attentiveness that
is rarely seen nowadays.
Studying with this classic furniture artisan really taught my friend more
about making affordable contemporary furniture than anything else he could
do, and I had the privilege of accompanying him on his lessons on
occasion. This experience made me appreciate the art of furniture making.
When my friend completed his training he decided to start his own
furniture business, and because of my passion in affordable contemporary
furniture he asked me to become his partner, which was really exciting. We
opted not to make the type of furniture available at stores like Target or
IKEA. Instead, we would
make mid-level contemporary furniture, priced within the range of the
average middle-class family, yet built to last for many years. I enjoyed
assisting my friend making this affordable contemporary furniture.
I like to think about furniture as a set, as opposed to a number of
individual pieces, and my favorite part was creating contemporary living
room furniture. Making the couch, coffee table, and the chairs all fit
together seamlessly was a lot of fun. Although I was making less money
than at my previous job, I was much happier. I found my niche in
affordable contemporary furniture.
Before too long our affordable contemporary furniture business started to
pick up. Once we established a name for ourselves among local clientele,
our business was booming. We had a hard time keeping up with the demand
for affordable contemporary furniture that we eventually had to hire other
people to help us. So you can see that if you put your heart into what you
do, you're bound to be successful!Since I got married I have only been
working part time at our furniture store but my passion for affordable
contemporary furniture never waned. At first my husband didn't really
appreciate modern furniture. He's more of the old fashioned and antique
type. So I made a deal with him that we would have antique furniture in
the living room, and modern bedroom furniture in the master bedroom. This
worked out just fine. In fact, today he likes the contemporary bed and
dresser. Soon we will have a contemporary end
table as well :)
We have also seriously been considering buying an
Oriental area rug for our living
room which will certainly thrill both of us and our guests.
